for Social Security Disability Insurance.
Definition
of Total Disability: If an
employee is unable to perform the material and substantial duties of the employee's
own occupation he/she is typically considered disabled.
When the own occ period is completed, an employee is still considered
disabled when unable to perform the duties of any gainful occupation for which
he/she is reasonably qualified by education, training or experience.
Partial
Disability Benefits: Most quality carriers we want to help
employees back to work, even if only on a part time basis, without their having
fear of losing income. A partial disability benefit is typically
payable based on an indexed earnings test during the period of partial employment.
Benefit
Offsets: Group
LTD benefits typically have an offset for Family Social Security benefits, as
well as other sources of income. Benefit offsets may vary by employee
class.
Earnings
Definition: Earnings
are typically defined as salary, excluding bonuses, overtime and commissions,
although most carriers have some flexibility as to how covered compensation
is defined. Also, earnings definitions may vary by employee class.
