Illinois HB 5285, which requires health plans’ dependent age eligibility to be extended up until the age of 26 (and up to age 30 for military veterans), has been signed into law as PA 95-0958 with an effective date of 6/1/09. The law applies to insured business, including HMO and individual, as well as self-insured counties, municipalities and school districts.

The law takes effect for new groups and groups that renew on or after the effective date of 6/1/09. For example, if a group renews on January 1, 2009, this new law will not be effective for that group until January 1, 2010.
